How the test picks gold or silver
The questions find your likely color season. The answer is that season's own metals: 4 seasons wear gold, 5 wear silver and 3 wear both.
Each answer places you on three measures: warm or cool, light or deep, bright or soft. Your likely season decides the metal. Light or deep and bright or soft decide the finish: light and delicate, rich and antiqued, polished or brushed. The result names the runner-up season too, so you can see how close the call was.
The test does not ask which metal you think suits you. That is the question you came here with, so it would only hand your own guess back to you.
What this test does not claim
- It reads your answers, not your face. If you misjudge your veins or the sun, the result moves with you.
- It names a likely season and a runner-up, never a certain one. Answer for your natural, undyed coloring.
- It says which metal flatters your coloring. Wear what you love: a metal you like is never wrong.
- The photo analysis on this site is not perfect either. We publish our own accuracy test, including where it gets seasons wrong.
How to know if gold or silver looks better on you
Check the result in a mirror. It takes two minutes, one gold piece and one silver piece.
- 1
Stand at a window
Daylight, no lamp, no makeup. Indoor bulbs make skin look warmer than it is, and that is the one thing this test judges.
- 2
Hold one metal, then the other
One gold piece and one silver piece, the plainer the better, like two chains. Hold each one flat under your chin, against bare skin.
- 3
Watch your skin, not the metal
The right metal makes your skin look even and clear. The wrong one leaves a gray or yellow cast along the jaw. If you cannot see a difference, both probably work.
Frequently asked
Is this gold or silver test free?
Yes. All 8 questions and the result are free. No email, no signup and no photo.
Should I wear gold or silver?
It depends on your undertone. Warm skin (golden or peachy) usually looks best in gold, cool skin (pink or bluish) in silver, and neutral skin in both. By color season: Light Spring, True Spring, Soft Autumn and True Autumn wear gold; Light Summer, True Summer, Deep Winter, True Winter and Bright Winter wear silver; Bright Spring, Soft Summer and Deep Autumn wear both.
How do I know if gold or silver looks better on me?
Hold a gold piece and a silver piece under your chin in daylight, one at a time, and watch your skin. The right metal makes it look even and clear. The wrong one leaves a gray or sallow cast. The quiz above asks about your veins, the sun, white or cream fabric, your eyes and hair, so you get an answer even if the mirror test is unclear.
What if both gold and silver look good on me?
Then your undertone is probably neutral, and you can wear both. Finish matters more for you than the metal: soft seasons look best in brushed or matte metal, bright seasons in polished metal.
Where does rose gold fit?
Rose gold is gold mixed with copper, so it reads warm, but softer than yellow gold. In the 12-season system it belongs to some warm and soft seasons, and a pale rose gold works for Light Summer next to silver. The test marks rose gold for you when your season lists it.
Does the vein test tell me gold or silver?
It is one clue. Green veins point to warm skin and gold, blue or purple veins to cool skin and silver. Veins are hard to read on many skin tones, so the quiz weighs them together with 7 other answers.
Does my skin depth change the answer?
It changes the finish more than the metal. Deep seasons can carry heavier pieces and darker metals like bronze or gunmetal, light seasons look best in delicate, light pieces. Gold or silver comes from your undertone, which deep and fair skin can both have.
