Cool undertone skin: how to tell, and the colors that suit it
Blue and pink-based skin, color looks best when it has no gold in it.
A cool undertone means the base colour under your skin is blue, pink or a bluish red rather than golden. It is independent of depth, very fair and very deep skin can both be cool. If your skin is often described as pink or red, that is usually a cool undertone showing through, not a tone of its own.
Cool skin sits under half of the twelve seasons, the Summers and the Winters. Which of those six you are is decided by depth and clarity, not temperature.
Signs of a cool undertone
No single test is decisive, read them together, in daylight, and go with what the majority say.
- The veins on the inside of your wrist look blue or purple rather than green.
- Silver jewellery looks cleaner against your skin than gold, which can look brassy.
- Pure white looks crisp on you, while cream or ivory can look slightly dull or yellowing.
- In strong sun you tend to burn before you tan, or you tan to a cool rather than golden brown.
- A cool pink or blue-red lipstick looks natural, where a warm coral or brick can look like it is sitting on top of your skin.

Swap this, wear that
The fastest upgrade is not a new color, it is the same color on the right base.
- Tomato red#A93226→
- True red#D50000
Same red, blue base instead of orange.
- Camel#C9A87C→
- Cool gray#78909C
The workhorse neutral, in your temperature.
- Olive green#808000→
- Pine emerald#00695C
Green with blue in it, not yellow.
- Peach#FFB68F→
- Powder pink#F2C4D0
A soft pink does what peach was trying to do.
Colors to be careful with
Orange #FF6D00
Pure warmth, it pulls a sallow, yellow cast into blue-based skin.
Mustard #B8860B
Golden and muddy at once; the exact opposite of a cool base.
Camel #C9A87C
The warm wardrobe neutral. It quietly drains cool skin where grey flatters it.
Rust #A0522D
An orange-brown, reads muddy next to pink and blue undertones.
Golden yellow #FFC400
The strongest warm signal in the wheel; it fights every cool tone.
Metals
- Silver
- White gold
- Platinum
- Rose gold
Silver, white gold and platinum first. Rose gold works when it leans pink rather than yellow.
Which seasons are cool?
Cool undertone narrows you to six of the twelve seasons, the three Summers and the three Winters. Depth and clarity pick between them:
The honest limit
Cool is the easier undertone to read at home, but do not trust a raw selfie: a camera’s white balance shifts warm against cool before you ever see the image. The free analysis corrects for that, it calibrates each photo against the whites of your eyes, an in-frame neutral that reveals the lighting, and a second photo taken in different light sharpens the reading further.
And undertone is only the temperature axis, one of three. Depth (light to deep) and clarity (bright to muted) decide which of your seasons is actually yours. The vein test is the fastest single check, and the free analysis settles the other two axes for you.

Frequently asked
How do I know if I have a cool undertone?
The three quickest tells agree surprisingly often: blue or purple veins at the wrist, silver looking cleaner than gold, and pure white looking better on you than cream. If two of the three point the same way in daylight, you are cool. If they disagree, you are probably neutral or olive, and a measured analysis settles it faster than re-running wrist tests.
Is a red undertone cool or warm?
Almost always cool. Skin described as red or pink is showing a blue-based flush, which is the cool family, "red undertone" and "pink undertone" are the same thing named at different strengths. The colours that calm it are the same blue-based palette that suits all cool skin; the warm oranges and golds are what make redness look louder.
Can dark skin have a cool undertone?
Yes. Undertone is independent of depth, deep skin can be as cool-based as very fair skin. On deep cool complexions the tells are the same: blue-based colours, cool reds and berries, and silver all look cleaner than their warm equivalents, while orange and mustard fight the skin.
What colours should cool undertones avoid?
The warm, golden family: orange, tomato red, mustard, peach, warm olive and golden yellow, plus warm-based browns and camel. They pull a sallow cast into cool skin. Reach for the blue-based version of any colour you love instead, a raspberry red rather than a brick one, a cool teal rather than a warm olive.
Does a cool undertone mean I am a Winter?
Not necessarily. Cool covers both the Summers and the Winters. The split between them is saturation, not temperature: Winters take colour at full strength and can wear true black and pure white, while Summers need the same cool colours softened and dusty. A measured analysis places you on that second axis rather than guessing.
