What colors look good on me?

The colors that look good on you match your own coloring in three ways: warm or cool, light or deep, bright or soft. Pick a color you like to see the version of it each color family wears.

How to find your colors at home

Three checks, in this order. Do them in daylight, with a bare face.

  1. 1. Is your skin warm or cool?

Hold a pure white top and then a cream one under your chin, in daylight, with no makeup. If the white makes the skin around your mouth look yellow, you are probably warm. If the cream makes you look dull, you are probably cool.

  2. 2. Is your coloring light or deep?

Take a photo by a window and turn it black and white. Look at your hair, eyes and skin together. If they all sit in the pale half, you are light. If your hair and eyes are close to black, you are deep. Most people land in between.

  3. 3. Do bright colors suit you, or soft ones?

Hold a clear, strong color next to your face, then a dusty version of the same color. If the strong one makes you look awake, you are bright. If it looks like the color is wearing you and the dusty one looks calm, you are soft.

These checks give you a shortlist of two or three seasons, not one answer. The color palette quiz turns your answers into a likely season and a runner-up.

How to tell if a color looks good on you

Hold the color under your chin and look at your face, not the color. A color that suits you:

  • makes your skin look even
  • makes the shadows under your eyes look lighter
  • makes your eyes look clearer

A color that fights you does the opposite: deeper shadows, more redness, and people see the top before they see you.

What this page does not claim

  • A season is a guide, not a rule. Wear any color you like.
  • Colors away from your face, like shoes or a bag, matter much less.
  • Two neighbouring seasons can look almost the same, so our analysis always shows the runner-up. How often it is right

Questions

What colors look good on me?

Colors that share your undertone, depth and clarity, which together point to one of 12 color seasons. A free analysis from one selfie gives you your season, how sure the reading is, and the season that came second.

How do I know what colors look good on me?

Watch your face, not the fabric. A color that suits you makes your skin look even and the shadows under your eyes lighter. A color that does not suit you makes those shadows deeper and brings out redness or a grey look. Hold two colors under your chin in daylight, one at a time, and compare. The free analysis shows your own face on your best palette, measured on your device.

Do warm or cool colors look better on me?

It depends on your undertone. If your skin has a golden, peach or olive cast, warm colors usually look better: the Light Spring, True Spring, Bright Spring, Soft Autumn, True Autumn and Deep Autumn palettes. If it has a pink or blue cast, cool colors usually look better: the Light Summer, True Summer, Soft Summer, Deep Winter, True Winter and Bright Winter palettes. Some people sit close to neutral and can wear the softer colors of both sides.

Is there a color that looks good on everyone?

No single color suits every palette, but some come close. On this site, powder pink has a close match in 7 of the 12 palettes, sea glass has a close match in 7 of the 12 palettes and icy lavender has a close match in 6 of the 12 palettes. A version of most colors exists in each family. The question is usually which version, not which color.

Does black look good on me?

Black is on the avoid list of 7 of the 12 palettes. Only Deep Winter, True Winter and Bright Winter carry black or a near-black, because those seasons have the depth and contrast to hold it. If black makes you look tired, a deep navy, charcoal or brown from your own palette does the same job.

Why do some colors make me look tired?

A color that fights your coloring pulls attention to the parts of your face that are already darker or redder. A cool grey can make warm skin look sallow, and a strong orange can make cool skin look flushed. The color is not the problem on its own. It is the mismatch with your undertone, depth or clarity.
