Warm undertone skin: how to tell, and the colors that suit it

Yellow and golden-based skin, colour looks best with warmth in it.

A warm undertone means the base colour under your skin is yellow, golden or peach rather than blue or pink. A "yellow undertone" is the same thing named by its most common tell. It is separate from depth, very fair and very deep skin can both be warm.

Warm skin sits under the other half of the twelve seasons, the Springs and the Autumns. Which of those six you are is decided by depth and clarity, not temperature.

Signs of a warm undertone

No single test is decisive, read them together, in daylight, and go with what the majority say.

  • The veins on your wrist look green rather than blue or purple.
  • Gold jewellery looks richer against your skin than silver, which can look flat or cold.
  • Cream and ivory look better on you than pure white, which can look stark or blue.
  • In sun you tend to tan to a golden brown rather than burning first.
  • A warm coral or peach lipstick looks natural, where a cool blue-pink can look harsh or drained.

Swap this, wear that

The fastest upgrade is not a new color, it is the same color on the right base.

Pure white#FFFFFF
Cream#F2E6CE

Same job, with the gold left in.

Black#000000
Coffee#5A4632

A warm dark that doesn’t shadow the face.

Cool fuchsia#C51162
Warm poppy#E85D4E

The bold pink-red, on a golden base.

Icy blue#4FC3F7
Warm denim#4E6E82

Blue that leans toward you.

Colors to be careful with

  • Icy pink #F8BBD0

A blue-based pastel, it leaves golden skin looking grey.

  • Cool fuchsia #C51162

Blue-red at full strength; the hardest clash with warmth.

  • Pure white #FFFFFF

Stark against golden skin. Cream does the same job kindly.

  • Black #000000

Harsher than any warm dark, espresso and deep olive are yours.

  • Icy blue #4FC3F7

A winter blue with no gold in it; it cools the face around it.

Metals

  • Yellow gold
  • Antique gold
  • Copper
  • Bronze

Yellow gold, copper and bronze. Silver rarely wins against warm skin unless it is warmed or brushed.

Which seasons are warm?

Warm undertone narrows you to six of the twelve seasons, the three Springs and the three Autumns. Depth and clarity pick between them:

The honest limit

The "yellow undertone" tell is reliable in person but treacherous in a raw photo, a camera adds or removes yellow with its white balance. The free analysis corrects for that: it calibrates each photo against the whites of your eyes, caps how far lighting can move the temperature reading, and takes the median across photos in different light.

And undertone is only the temperature axis, one of three. Depth (light to deep) and clarity (bright to muted) decide which of your seasons is actually yours. The vein test is the fastest single check, and the free analysis settles the other two axes for you.

Frequently asked

How do I know if I have a warm undertone?

Three tells agree most of the time: green veins at the wrist, gold looking richer than silver, and cream looking better on you than pure white. If two of the three point warm in daylight, you are warm. If they split, you are probably neutral or olive, and a measured analysis settles it more reliably than re-running wrist tests.

Is a yellow undertone the same as a warm undertone?

Effectively yes. "Yellow undertone" is the most common way a warm undertone shows up, and people search for it by that name. Golden, peachy and yellow-based all describe the same warm temperature under the skin. The colours that suit it are the same: golden, earthy and coral rather than icy and blue-based.

What colours should warm undertones avoid?

The icy, blue-based family: icy pink, cool magenta, blue-red, pure white and true black straight against the face. They can leave warm skin looking grey. Swap in the warm version of anything you love, a tomato red for a raspberry one, a warm teal for an icy blue, cream for pure white.

Does a warm undertone mean I am an Autumn?

Not on its own. Warm covers both the Springs and the Autumns. The difference is clarity: Springs suit clear, bright, sunlit colour, while Autumns suit deeper, softer, earthier colour. A measured analysis decides that axis rather than assuming the deeper Autumn every time.
